Booking a Cruise Through a Travel Advisor: What the Website Misses

Booking a cruise through a travel advisor rarely costs more, because the line sets the fare. What changes is the cabin you end up in, and who answers at eleven at night.

People assume booking a cruise through a travel advisor costs more. It generally does not. Cruise lines set the fare and advisors book into the same inventory.

What changes is everything around the fare.

Which cabin, not just which category

The website sells you a category. It rarely tells you that a particular cabin sits beneath the pool deck, above the theatre, next to a crew door, or under the jogging track.

Those cabins are in the same category at the same price as the quiet ones. Someone who has sailed the ship knows the difference, and deck plans do not.

Motion matters too. Midship and lower decks move least, and if anyone in the party is prone to seasickness that single placement decision matters more than the cabin's contents.

The extras that attach to a sailing, and change

Advisors can often book into group space or promotional blocks that carry extras: onboard credit, prepaid gratuities, speciality dining or beverage inclusions.

These vary by line, ship and sailing date, and they come and go. We check what is attached to your specific sailing rather than promising a fixed list, because anyone promising a fixed list is describing last season's offer.

The ship that suits a family is wrong for a couple

Cruise lines are not interchangeable. The ship that suits a family with young children is a poor fit for a couple wanting quiet, and a small luxury ship is wasted on teenagers.

Family-focused ships carry extensive children's programming and water parks. Premium and luxury lines skew older and quieter, with more included and fewer children aboard. River ships are a different product entirely, and our cruise and tour service covers both.

Getting this wrong is the most expensive cruise mistake, and it is not recoverable once aboard.

Eleven at night, the day before sailing

Itineraries change. Ports get skipped for weather, mechanical issues or port congestion. Flights to the embarkation city are delayed, and the ship does not wait.

When that happens the night before sailing, the difference between an advisor and a call centre queue is the entire value of the booking. We deal with the line, the air and the hotel while you are still at the airport.

It is also why we push independent flights and a night before embarkation. Arriving on sailing day is the single most common way people miss a cruise.

What booking a cruise through a travel advisor costs

For a straightforward cruise booking we are generally compensated by the cruise line, so there is often no planning fee at all. Where a sailing forms part of a longer custom itinerary, fees are set out before any planning begins.

The fare is about half of what a sailing actually costs once gratuities, drinks, excursions and the flights are in, and missing the ship is the risk worth insuring, which is covered in whether you need travel insurance.

When the website is fine

If you have sailed the exact ship before, know the cabin number you want, and the sailing is a simple round trip from a port you can drive to, book it yourself. That is a real answer.

The case for an advisor strengthens with complexity: a first cruise, a multi-generational party, flights involved, a line you have not sailed, or a special occasion where getting it wrong is not recoverable.
