Most people weigh travel insurance against lost luggage. Do you need travel insurance? The answer rests almost entirely on medical cover and evacuation.
Most people weigh travel insurance against lost luggage. Luggage is the least of it.
Do you need travel insurance? The case rests almost entirely on medical cover and evacuation, and that is where the numbers stop being trivial.
Domestic health insurance frequently provides little or no cover outside the country, and where it does, it usually requires you to pay up front and claim back.
Medicare does not generally cover care outside the United States.
A hospital abroad will ask how you are paying before treatment in many countries. That is the situation the policy exists for.
Routine treatment abroad is often cheaper than people fear.
Medical evacuation is not. Repatriation by air ambulance from a remote region, or transfer from a cruise ship or an island, runs into tens of thousands of dollars and is not something you can arrange from a hospital bed.
If a trip involves remote areas, a ship, or anywhere with limited local facilities, evacuation cover is the line that matters.
Many cards include some travel protection and it is generally narrower than assumed, often limited to trips paid for entirely on that card, with low medical limits and significant exclusions.
It is worth reading rather than relying on. It sometimes removes the need for a separate policy on a short domestic trip, and it rarely does for an international one.
This is the part that costs people cover they thought they had.
Several benefits, pre-existing condition waivers and cancel-for-any-reason in particular, are only available if the policy is purchased within a set number of days of your first trip deposit. That window is typically short, measured in a couple of weeks.
Buy at the airport and those options are gone regardless of what you are willing to pay.
Buy when you pay the first deposit. That is the whole rule.
Trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation, baggage delay and loss, and missed connections. Cover levels and exclusions vary considerably between providers.
Cancel for any reason is an upgrade rather than standard, reimburses a percentage rather than the full cost, and must be bought inside that early window.
We are not the insurer. What we can do is tell you which cover the shape of your trip actually calls for, because a fortnight in Western Europe and a remote lodge with a two-day evacuation route are different risks, and make sure the policy is bought at the point in the process where the useful options are still open.
Read the exclusions before buying. Pre-existing conditions, adventure activities and some destinations are the usual gaps. We place policies through our travel insurance service, and the packing list has the documents to carry alongside it.
